AMERICA’S CUP, RAS AL KHAIMAH HOPES STAY AFLOAT IN THE CUP BID
[Source The National] The owner of the Alinghi sailing team said yesterday he would push for Ras al Khaimah to host the 34th staging of the America’s Cup if they defend their title next year.
The Swiss team want to put the trophy on the line against BMW Oracle Racing in UAE waters in February, but may be forced to hold the competition in Spain instead after legal objections from their American challengers.
Should Alinghi win the most prestigious trophy in sailing for a third time in the port city of Valencia – where the series will be held if the New York Supreme Court dismisses Alinghi’s appeal this week – then Ernesto Bertarelli and his team will again nominate the Emirates as host of their next defence.
Under the terms of the deed of gift, which determines the rules for the oldest sporting trophy to still be contested, the race series must be held in the hemisphere where it is summer.
That means proposing to hold the series in Ras al Khaimah in May or September may be permitted. Bertarelli said his team have enjoyed their stay in the Emirates – where they had been preparing to host the series .
“It will have brought the idea of staging the America’s Cup here, this has further consolidated our belief that this is a great place for racing, especially in this kind of boat – he said – It has been brilliant in Ras al Khaimah. The people here have made us very welcome and enabled us to be operational very quickly. It has been great working with everyone here”.
Next year’s America’s Cup will be a best-of-three series between Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing, the challengers from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Yacht Club.
Oracle argue that Ras al Khaimah does not comply with the deed of gift and that it would not be a safe venue due to its proximity to Iran. Alinghi won the trophy in Valencia in 2007.
