America’s Cup, Alinghi in navigazione per la prima volta sul Lago di Ginevra

America’s Cup – Le Bouveret – Il Defender svizzero dell’America’s Cup, Alinghi ha issato oggi per la prima volta le vele del suo maxi catamarano Alinghi 5 sul lago di Ginevra in Svizzera. Lasciati gli ormeggi, il multiscafo di 90 piedi è stato salutato da centinaia di spettatori in attesa di vedere la barca navigare a largo di Le Bouveret.

Murray Jones, che sta partecipando ai primi test del maxi catamarano, primo passo del processo di sviluppo verso la 33a America’s Cup, ha così commentato questa prima giornata in acqua: “Siamo usciti questa mattina con una lunga lista di cose da fare: i primi test della barca, il controllo delle strutture, le prime manovre da provare e le vele da controllare. È andato tutto bene e siamo riusciti praticamente a completare tutto il programma di lavoro. Ci sono sistemi molto complessi a bordo tutti peraltro nuovi, ma nel complesso è stata una giornata fantastica. La barca volava letteralmente sia di bolina che al lasco e siamo senz’altro molto soddisfatti del primo giorno di navigazione. La barca è un tributo ai nostri progettisti e a tutti coloro che l’hanno costruita. Un’imbarcazione di questa complessità che esce dai box il primo giorno e che ci offre queste sensazioni, è qualcosa di molto impressionante, davvero”.

Grant Simmer, coordinatore dei progettisti ha osservato i test odierni da un gommone: “È stata una giornata molto positiva, le cose da fare erano molte. Abbiamo cominciato con molta prudenza, ma alla fine abbiamo raggiunto tutti i nostri obiettivi. È stato eccitante vedere la barca navigare per la prima volta dopo tutto il tempo impiegato per la progettazione, la costruzione, la preparazione delle vele e di tutta l’attrezzatura. Ad un certo punto finalmente abbiamo messo tutto insieme e la macchina ha cominciato a funzionare. Fantastico! Non vediamo l’ora di ricominciare domani”.

ALINGHI 5 SAILS FOR FIRST TIME ON LAKE GENEVA
[Alinghi Press Release] Swiss America’s Cup Defender, Alinghi, hoisted the sails on its giant new catamaran Alinghi 5 for the first time today on Lake Geneva, Switzerland. The 90ft multihull was cheered off the dock at midday by hundreds of spectators watching the maiden sail out of Le Bouveret.

Murray Jones, who is running the initial trials of the giant multihull that represents a first step in the development process towards the 33rd America’s Cup, gave his comments on a good first day on the water: “We went out this morning with a list of objectives to work through: testing the boat, checking the structure, doing some manoeuvres and seeing if the sails would all sheet and it went pretty well; we ticked off just about everything. There are a lot of systems on the boat that are complicated and new, but it was fantastic. To fly the boat upwind and downwind with gennaker was awesome for the first day of sailing. The boat is a tribute to the designers and the boat builders. To deliver a boat of this complexity that works straight out of the box on the first day is impressive; really impressive.”

Grant Simmer, design team coordinator, was observing the trials from a RIB: “It’s been a good day, we had a list of things we wanted to tick off and we took it slowly and carefully and have finished the day achieving all those things. It was exciting to see the boat sailing for the first time after so much time designing, boat building, sail making and spar making; seeing all those bits come together and seeing the machine working is great! We’re looking forward to tomorrow.”
