PalmaVela, esordio con vittoria per Azzurra

Palma di Maiorca – Audi Azzurra Sailing Team conquista una vittoria netta alla Mapfre Palma Vela, regata alla quale lo scafo con il guidone dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda ha partecipato assieme ad altri TP52 per un “warm up” in vista dell’Audi MedCup.
“Esordire con una vittoria è sempre di buon auspicio – ha dichiarato lo skipper Guillermo Parada – l’equipaggio è consistente e la barca, messa in acqua solo da pochi giorni, non ha manifestato alcun problema, stiamo imparando a conoscerla e a metterla a punto, ma imparare vincendo è sempre di gran soddisfazione! Desidero condividere la soddisfazione di oggi con il nostro armatore Alberto Roemmers, con Audi e con lo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda che ci hanno dato fiducia e la responsabilità di portare sui campi di regata internazionali un nome vincente come quello di Azzurra“.
Tempo nuvoloso e vento sostenuto, oggi nelle acque antistanti Palma de Mallorca, dove le raffiche hanno raggiunto i 25 nodi. Nelle tre prove odierne Azzurra ha conseguito due secondi e un primo posto, dimostrando di saper controllare Ran, barca anch’essa nuova e avversaria diretta qui a Palma, che Azzurra andrà a incontrare tra meno di un mese a Cascais, nella prima tappa dell’Audi MedCup.
“Dovremo lavorare ancora nei prossimi giorni – sottolinea Vasco Vascotto – per essere pronti il 17 maggio in Portogallo. La barca risponde bene ma questa è stata soprattutto la settimana dell’equipaggio, che ha manovrato meglio di tutti, la vittoria è dei ragazzi a bordo e dello shore team, che ha fatto in modo che la barca fosse pronta prima delle altre”.
Alberto Roemmers, armatore: “Sono davvero soddisfatto, alla prima occasione in cui la barca è scesa in acqua, ha dimostrato ottime potenzialità, dimostrandosi sempre più veloce della barca dello scorso anno che qui regatava con il nuovo team che l’ha acquistata. In condizioni di vento sostenuto si è dimostrata subito competitiva, andremo a vedere nel prossimo futuro come si comporta anche con aria più leggera. I miei complimenti vanno a tutti i ragazzi dell’equipaggio che hanno regatato perfettamente”.
Successo italiano anche tra i Maxi Wally dove a spuntarla è stato Inti. Secondo sin dalle battute iniziali, il Wally di Lauro Buoro si è reso protagonista di una serie pressoché perfetta e ha messo in fila Y3K e il leader della prima ora Magic Carpet 2. Di ieri l’affermazione tra i Maxi di Alegre, vincitore di tutte le manche disputate.
Tra i J-80 l’ha spuntata Mapfre, al comando sin dalle battute iniziali, mentre in IRC ha avuto vita facile l’ex TP52 Pace.

PALMAVELA, AND THE WINNERS ARE…
[PalmaVela Press Release] One of Europe’s most scenic events came to an end today in the bay of Palma after four days of racing which delivered very different wind patterns and great conditions throughout the whole contest. In a good northeasterly breeze of 18 to 22 knots, the Mapfre PalmaVela regatta set up two coastal courses of 14,8 miles for the Maxis and Maxi Wally and 12,3 for the Vintage and Classic, whereas the rest of the classes completed windward-leeward races.
The honours in the TP52 class went to Guillermo Parada on Audi Azzurra Sailing Team, followed by Nikklas Zentrömm’s Ran which was second, and Bribón which was third. Ran managed to win today’s first race after a good start on the pin end, whereas Audi Azzurra Sailing Team was second and Bribón was third. The second race was won by Azzurra thus clinching the TP25 trophy, followed by Ran and Bribón. The Swedish boat showed a great performance in Palma and will be one of the contenders to take into account in the upcoming Audi MedCup Circuit due to start on May 16th in Cascais.
Italian Inti claimed first place in the Maxi Wally class after winning today’s coastal race. Second was YK3, and also British Magic Carpet 2 dropped from being second to third. Open Season could have been second but a protest won by Magic Carpet 2 pushed her down to sixth place.
With an almost perfect score of five bullets and a second place, Andrés Soriano’s Alegre dominantly won the Maxi classification. Monaco flagged Highland Flying XI of Irvine Laidlaw crossed the finish line first today thus being second in the overall scoring, whereas British Jethou of Sir Peter Odgen was third.
J-80 heavy weight Carlos Martínez’s Mapfre signed a dominant win in the one design class for the third consecutive year. Two bullets and a second place in today’s three races gave the Spanish team a fifteen point advantage upon Bufete Frau Abogados, which moved up to second after a third and two fourth places today. Third was Nextel Engineering of Ignacio “Trucha” Camino.
The trophy in the Vintage class went to Albert Kusak’s Enterprise after crossing today’s 12,3 miles coastal finish line first. Second was Moonbeam IV skippered by Mikaël Creac’h and third was Tim Liesenhoff’s Marigan. Winner of the Classic class was Merengue IV of Xisco Pou, followed by Margarita Estalindalamar of Antón de Llano and Miguel Rigo’s Freda.
Five bullets gave Pace the honours in the IRC class after four races and a tight fight with Fernando León’s Cam in today’s first contest where they crossed the finish line together. Third was S.Y. Ace of Fred Stelle.
