PalmaVela, dopo la lunga Azzurra è ancora leader

Palma di Maiorca – Audi Azzurra Sailing Team ottiene un ottimo secondo posto nella regata costiera della Mapfre Palma Vela e consolida la sua leadership. Domani ultimo giorno di regata, poi lo scafo battente il guidone dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda verrà trasferito a Cascais per la prima tappa dell’Audi MedCup.
Audi Azzurra Sailing Team, guidato dallo skipper argentino Guillermo Parada e con gli italiani Francesco Bruni e Vasco Vascotto nei ruoli di tattico e stratega, ha ottenuto il secondo posto dietro a Ran, nella regata costiera di trenta miglia. Oggi le condizioni meteo erano quelle considerate più penalizzanti per Azzurra e favorevoli per il suo avversario diretto, ossia vento leggero, mai superiore ai 10-11 nodi e un’onda morta assai fastidiosa.
Dopo un’ottima partenza, Azzurra è andata a coprire l’avversario, ma Ran è riuscita ugualmente a svincolarsi da sottovento perché ottimizzata per condizioni come quelle odierne. La terza posizione in boa è rimasta tale per gran parte della regata perché, spiega Parada: “Questo tipo di percorsi costieri prevede una rotta obbligata che impedisce le opzioni tattiche tipiche dei percorsi a bastone”.
Aggiunge Vascotto: “Siamo stati bravi nelle manovre e a cogliere l’unica opportunità possibile, quella di issare il nostro gennaker A3 che ci ha consentito di passare Gladiator da sottovento su una rotta più poggiata, ma in rotta per la boa posta davanti a Palma, colmando leggermente il distacco da Ran, che oggi è apparso imprendibile. Siamo consapevoli di dover lavorare ancora sulla messa a punto per le arie leggere, ma siamo venuti qui proprio per questo”.
Gli fa eco Checco Bruni: “Oggi era la prima volta in condizioni di minor vento, ma sappiamo quali correttivi tecnici sviluppare, perché Azzurra è stata studiata per un range di vento molto preciso, dato che il mezzo non può essere ugualmente al top in ogni condizione. La randa che useremo nella MedCup avrà una forma studiata per soffrire il meno possibile le arie leggere, e siamo certi che per metà maggio saremo pronti”.
Oggi era assente dalla flotta dei TP52 un altro scafo nuovo, Quantum Racing, che non è apparso ancora a punto ed è stato disalberato per lavori.
Intanto, nelle altre classi, il MiniMaxi Alegre ha vinto con un giorno di anticipo e lo stesso ha fatto Y3K, trionfatore nella classe Maxi Wally. Tra i Maxi, invece, Inti di Lauro Buoro ha scalzato Magic Carpet 2, oggi penalizzato con un 720° a causa di una mancata precedenza, dalla vetta della classifica provvisoria.
Domani le ultime regate nel golfo di Palma de Mallorca e poi il 17 maggio inizierà in Portogallo l’Audi MedCup.

PALMAVELA, TWO WINNERS CONFIRMED
[PalmaVela Press Release] TP52’s, Maxis, and IRC completed a coastal race of 41 miles today, whereas Vintage and Classic run a 18,4 miles of also coastal course. Maxi Alegre added another win to an already perfect score which turns them into the Mapfre PalmaVela Maxi winner this year, whereas German Y3K also won today in the Maxi Wally class. As far as the TP52’s are concerned, Ran scratched some points thanks to her win today.
As it happened yesterday, the third day of races in Palma started with a heavy early shower which left almost clear skies for the rest of the day. At around 12.15 hours, Wally, Maxi, TP52, and IRC started the coastal races which explored the bay of Palma in southerly average winds of 12 knots. German Claus Peter Offen’s Y3K was first and climbs up to the third overall position after crossing the line 25 minutes ahead of Lauro Buoro’s Inti, which finished second and is now third in the scoring board. Sir Linday Owen-Jones’ Magic Carpet was penalized with a 720º turn after a port-starboard incident at the windward mark and completed the course in the fifth place thus losing out their lead to Inti in the overall classification after five races.
After another win today British Maxi Alegre clears out from the rest of the fleet and becomes the 2011 Mapfre PalmaVela winner with eight points advantage over second classified Xavier Mecoy’s Highland Fling XI. The Monaco flagged Maxi was second and third was British Jethou of Sir Peter Odgen, equally placed in the overall classification after five races.
Ran of Swedish boat owner Niklas Zennstrom moves up to second place after crossing the finish line two minutes ahead of Guillermo Parada’s Audi Azzurra Sailing Team, inspite of the Italo-Argentinians rounding first the windward mark. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda flagged brand new TP52 Azzurra remains on the lead with and advantage of six points upon also new build Ran, but with three races to go the regatta hasn’t been decided yet. Tony Langley’s Gladiator was third in today’s coastal race and is fourth in the overall scoring, whereas Bribón payed for their over the line and drops to the fifth place.
Carlos Martinez’s Mapfre enjoys a comfortable lead of seven points upon second classified. The Mapfre PalmaVela defending champion in the J-80 division won today’s first race and was second and fifth in the last two. Olympic medallist Jose María Van der Ploeg’s Great Sailing made an impressive showing with two sixth places and two wins, which boosts them up to the second place in the scoring board after six races. Nextel Engineering of also Spanish Ignacio Camino was over the line in the first race and was third and second in the two last ones.
Johnny Vincent British flagged Pace won the IRC coastal race after a tight contest with Fernando León’s Cam, which was second, as he is in the overall classification after the three races.
A very even vintage class features a triple tie on four points between Tim Liesenhoff’s Marigan, Monaco flagged Moonbeam IV steered by Mikaël Creach and Albert Kusak’s Enterprise after two races. Marigan won today’s coastal race, followed by Enterprise and Moonbeam IV. Classic Merengue IV won in her class thus holding to the lead, whereas Italian Margarita Estalindalamar is second, and Freda is third.
