Giraglia Rolex Cup, un’ampia flotta al via

Nel momento in cui la Costa Azzura si riscalda, accogliendo sulle sue spiagge gli abitanti del luogo e i turisti, le barche da regata più competitive si avviano a St. Tropez.
L’evento, che prenderà il via domenica 14 giugno, ha attratto quest’anno un numero record d’iscritti – quasi 200 – nonostante la difficile situazione economica globale. André Beaufils, presidente del circolo organizzatore, la Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez in collaborazione con lo Yacht Club Italiano e lo Yacht Club de France, attribuisce questa forte partecipazione alla promozione dell’evento con ampio anticipo e alla ragionevole tassa d’iscrizione. Apparentemente questa strategia ha funzionato, dato che le iscrizioni sono fioccate senza tregua per tutta la settimana.
La regata prevede tre giorni di prove inshore sulle boe per tutti gli yacht superiori a 30 piedi nelle divisioni IRC, IRC/ORC e Classic. Mercoledì 17 giugno partirà la Giraglia Race, la classica regata d’altura di 243 miglia che conduce la flotta da St. Tropez a Genova, passando dall’isolotto della Giraglia all’estrema punta settentrionale della Corsica.
Nello storico porto di St. Tropez, sotto uno splendido sole e sotto lo sguardo dell’emblematica Torre dell’Orologio, è già ormeggiata una flotta molto competitiva. I concorrenti che regatano a St. Tropez sono un mix di amatori e professionisti e la flotta include Swan (compresi Maxi, Swan 45 e Swan 42 one-design), Grand Soleil, First, IMX 40, J-Boats (J/133, J/122, J/109) e svariati modelli da regata/crociera, fino ai più recenti mini-Maxi, alcuni dei quali appena varati.
In questa giornata d’allenamento caratterizzata da una leggera brezza da terra di 8-10 nodi sulla baia di St. Tropez, sarebbe stato facile illudersi di potersi godere lo splendido panorama: per gli equipaggi del calibro di Luna Rossa, Ran, Jethou e Bella Mente, invece, oggi è stata l’opportunità di scrutare gli avversari. Il gruppo ha navigato per un po’ di bolina, cercando di confrontare le rispettive performance in vista dell’imminente settimana di regata.
Sebbene la maggior parte della flotta sia composta di amatori e l’evento sia prevalentemente Corinthian, non c’è da sorprendersi della presenza di velisti professionisti in un evento così importante. Grant Simmer, velista e tattico australiano di Coppa America, sarà a bordo del nuovo 21 metri (72 piedi) Ran di Judel-Vrolijk, di proprietà di Niklas Zennstrom. Zennstrom, famoso per il suo successo con aziende tech quali Skype e Kazaa, sta emergendo anche sui campi di regata grazie a una serie di ottimi piazzamenti negli appuntamenti primaverili del circuito mediterraneo.
Marc Pajot è qui per godersi la regata a bordo di French Spirit One, il super maxi di 27m (90 piedi); la barca è stata charterizzata per festeggiare il compleanno di un amico – ma i concorrenti faranno bene a non liquidare questo potenziale avversario.
Lo Swan 42 Kora 4, dell’armatore/skipper Paolo Scerni, è qui per difendere la vittoria overall combinata (inshore + altura) nella divisione IRC del 2008.

[Giraglia Rolex Cup] For this the 57th year, the Giraglia Rolex Cup has roughly marked the start of the summer sailing season in the Mediterranean. Just as the Côte d’Azur heats up with locals and tourists enjoying the first of the good weather and heading to the coast, so too the top race boats find their way to St. Tropez to compete.
And, as if in some way to defy the current economic situation, a near record number of entries – close to 200 – have registered for the regatta that begins tomorrow, Sunday June 14. André Beaufils, Président of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, an organizer, along with the Yacht Club Italiano and the Yacht Club de France, attributes the strong turnout to increased advance promotion along with a reasonable entry fee. It seems to have worked as the entries been continued to stream in all week.
The regatta will feature three days of inshore, around the buoys racing for all yachts over 30 feet in IRC, IRC/ORC, and Classic divisions. Then on Wednesday, June 17 the Giraglia Race, the 243-mile classic distance race tests the fleet offshore from St. Tropez to Genoa, via the craggy Giraglia rock at the tip of Corsica.
A competitive fleet has arrived in the old port of St Tropez under brilliant blue skies, with the iconic clock tower beckoning all sailors. The sailors in St. Tropez are made up of both amateurs and professionals on board a range of designs from Swan (including the Maxis as well as the Swan 45 and 42 one-designs), Grand Soleil, First, IMX 40, J-Boats (J/133, J/122, J/109) and other keen racer/cruisers on up to the latest mini-Maxis, some just launched.
On this picture postcard of a practice day, with a light onshore breeze of 8-10 knots across the Bay of St. Tropez, it would be easy to be lulled into thinking this was a perfect day for taking in the sights, but for the likes of Luna Rossa, Ran, Jethou, and Bella Mente this was an opportunity to see what everyone was made of; the group briefly sailed upwind together, each trying to gauge their performance in advance of the week’s racing.
While the bulk of the fleet is amateur and the event is largely Corinthian, not surprisingly for an event of such stature some professionals are found among the mix. Grant Simmer, the Australian America’s Cup sailor and tactician, will call the shots on the new 21 meter (72 ft) Judel-Vrolijk, Ran for owner Niklas Zennstrom. While Zennstrom is known for his prowess with such tech companies as Skype and Kazaa, he is also making a name for himself and his boat on the race course with good showings in the earlier Med spring regattas.
Onboard French Spirit One, the 27m (90 ft) super-maxi, Marc Pajot is here to enjoy the competition; the boat was chartered to celebrate a friend’s birthday – but competitors are wise not to dismiss their intent to sail fast.
The Swan 42 Kora 4, with owner/skipper Paolo Scerni, will be back to defend following their combined overall win (inshore + distance) in the IRC division in 2008.
While the bulk of the entries are from France and Italy, there is good representation from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Russian and Portugal.
