LVPS, solo rischi per Alinghi nel terzo giorno del Round Robin 2

[singlepic=1612,250,170,,left]Louis Vuitton Pacific Series – Auckland – Alinghi ha scelto di non regatare oggi nel match n° 5 del Round Robin 2 in programma contro Emirates Team New Zealand.

Il regolamento dell’evento, infatti, prevede che la regata contro i padroni di casa ammessi comunque di diritto alla finale, non dia alcun punteggio per la classifica del secondo Round Robin. C’è sempre il rischio però, in caso di un contatto tra le barche, di subire una penalità, ovvero la detrazione di un punto, come successo ieri nel match tra BMW Oracle Racing e Team Origin.

In considerazione dell’alto livello tecnico di questo secondo Round Robin e del fatto che al termine dello stesso tra pochi giorni si faranno i conti con la classifica, Alinghi avrebbe avuto tutto da perdere e nulla da guadagnare partecipando alla regata contro Emirates Team New Zealand.

Ed Baird, timoniere di Alinghi, spiega i motivi di questa decisione: “Questo è un evento meraviglioso, le regate sono stupende e le condizioni estive sono fantastiche. Siamo felici del fatto di poter essere tornati in acqua tutti insieme un’altra volta. Normalmente non avremmo rinunciato all’occasione di regatare contro Team New Zealand come peraltro abbiamo fatto diverse volte in passato, per cui siamo molto dispiaciuti di aver dovuto fare questa difficile scelta strategica.”

“La realtà dei fatti è che avremmo soltanto da perdere se si verificasse qualsiasi incidente o contatto tra le barche. Ne abbiamo parlato tutti insieme e abbiamo deciso che non avrebbe senso assumere un rischio del genere, soprattutto dopo quello che è successo ieri nella regata tra BMW Oracle Racing e Team Origin. Gli organizzatori fanno bene ad applicare il regolamento per evitare collisioni e incidenti, ma se noi dobbiamo prenderci un richio lo dobbiamo fare in una regata che da punteggio”.

Baird ha così concluso: “Domani ci aspetta un match importante contro BMW Oracle Racing, ci vogliamo concentrare su di esso e sul prosieguo dell’evento”.

NO GAIN OLNY RISK FOR ALINGHI ON DAY 3 OF LVPS RR2
[Alinghi Press Release] Alinghi has chosen not to race Match 5 of Day 3 of the Round Robin 2 against Emirates Team New Zealand. The way the event is structured races against TNZ don’t count in Round Robin 2, however hard contact penalties can result in a deduction of points [as in the BMW Oracle vs. Team Origin match on 6 Feb]. With a competitive elimination round coming up in the next few days Alinghi had everything to lose and nothing to gain in racing the home team Emirates Team New Zealand.

Ed Baird, Alinghi helmsman, explains the decision: “We are loving this event, the racing has been great and the summer conditions have been fantastic. It is great that we can all be back on the water together again. Normally we would jump at the chance to sail against Team New Zealand as we have so many times in the past, so we are sorry to have to make this difficult strategic choice.

“The reality is that there is no upside for us and only bad things that can happen if we have any kind of incident or contact. As a group we talked this through and decided that it didn’t make sense to take that risk after yesterday’s docking of points to both BMW Oracle Racing and Team Origin. It’s clear that the event is serious about avoiding close incidents and if we are going to take a risk, it’s going to be in a race that counts.”
