ISaF Rolex World Sailor of the Year, i titoli 2008 a Sensini e Ainslie

[singlepic=742,250,170,,left]ISaF Rolex World Sailor of the Year – Madrid – Alessandra Sensini (ITA) e Ben Ainslie (GBR) hanno ricevuto il prestigioso premio ISaF Rolex World Sailor of the Year 2008. La cerimonia di premiazione si è svolta questa sera nella splendida cornice di La Quinta de Jarama a Madrid, in Spagna. Presentatore ufficiale della serata è stato il celebre commentatore televisivo americano Gary Jobson. ognuno con le sue storie, Alessandra Sensini, nel campo del windsurf, è un’atleta che vanta una lunga carriera di successo. Nel 2008 la Sensini è diventata la prima donna ad aver vinto quattro medaglie olimpiche nella vela: l’argento nel 2008, l’oro a Sydney nel 2000 e il bronzo ad Atene nel 2004 e ad Atlanta nel 1996.
“E’ un onore vincere questo premio – ha dichiarato l’atleta 38enne – Dopo l’ultima vittoria di Pechino sono la velista con il maggior numero di medaglie olimpiche al mondo. Vincere gli ISaF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards è per me il coronamento della mia lunga carriera sportiva”.
Ben Ainslie non è un volto nuovo degli ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards, avendo già vinto due volte questo premio. Con tre medaglie d’oro e un argento al suo attivo dopo il recente successo di Qingdao, Ainslie si schiera con i migliori velisti olimpici al mondo. Imbattuto nel Finn sin dal 2004, Ainslie chiude il periodo di nomina con il titolo di campione europeo, mondiale e olimpico. “E’ un vero onore partecipare a quest’ambito riconoscimento al termine di una stagione agonistica così importante,” ha dichiarato Ainslie.
“Essere eletto come vincitore è fantastico. Non solo per me, ma anche per tutti quelli che mi hanno sostenuto in questo percorso.”  Gli ISaF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards sono considerati come uno dei massimi riconoscimenti che un velista possa ricevere per i propri risultati agonistici.

“E’ davvero difficile descrivere le mie emozioni in questo momento,” ha dichiarato la Sensini, non appena insignita del titolo femminile di ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year. “E’ un onore trovarmi sul palco accanto ai migliori velisti al mondo e ricevere questo riconoscimento. Mi ricordo quando vedendo i Giochi Olimpici di Los Angeles del 1984 sognai un giorno di poter salire sul podio con la bandiera del mio paese. Ho partecipato a cinque Olimpiadi ed è da vent’anni che mi adeguo a nuove tecnologie e cambiamenti. Essere qui, questa sera, è davvero importante e vi ringrazio tutti dal profondo del mio cuore.”

Ben Ainslie questa sera ha scritto una nuova pagina di storia, essendo il primo atleta ad aver vinto quest’Award per la terza volta nella propria carriera. “Come Alessandra, desidero ringraziare di cuore tutti coloro che hanno reso possibile ciò,” ha dichiarato Ainslie, salutando dal palco i suoi genitori e sua sorella, che lo hanno accompagnato alla cerimonia. Quando gli è stato chiesto quali siano i suoi progetti futuri, Ainslie ha manifestato chiaramente le sue ambizioni: “il prossimo obiettivo per la Gran Bretagna è la Coppa America – abbiamo un ottimo team britannico. Ci sono molti eroi della Coppa America in questa sala, speriamo di vedervi presto in mare,” ha aggiunto sorridendo.

ISAF ROLEX WORLD SAILOR OF THE YEAR, THE WINNERS ARE ALESSANDRA SENSINI AND BEN AINSLIE 
[singlepic=743,250,170,,left]ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year – Madrid – Alessandra Sensini (ITA) and Ben Ainslie (GBR) received this evening the prestigious prize of ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year. Alessandra Sensini is one of the nominees that has had a long and successful career, recently adding her name to the record books in 2008 when she became the first woman to win four Olympic medals in sailing, adding the 2008 silver to her collection that includes a gold from Sydney (2000) and bronze from Athens (2004) and Atlanta (1996). Ben Ainslie is no stranger to the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards, having twice won the award before. Another Olympian who will be joining the 2008 nominees and guests this year in Madrid, Ainslie has joined the ranks of the world’s most successful Olympic sailors with three gold medals and one silver, after a winning his latest campaign. He rests unbeaten in the Finn since 2004 and Ainslie ends this year’s nomination period with the European, World and Olympic titles to his name. The ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards are recognized as one of the highest honours a sailor may receive in recognition of his/her outstanding achievements by the world of sailing.

“It’s so difficult to describe my feelings in this moment,” said Sensini upon being named the female ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year. “It’s an honour to stand on the same stage as the best sailors in the world and receive this recognition. I remember seeing the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and dreaming of being on the podium with my country’s flag. I’ve now completed 5 Olympics, that’s 20 years of adapting to new technologies and changes and to be here now, tonight, is so important and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
Ben Ainslie made history once again this evening as the first person ever to have won the Award three times in his career. “Like Alessandra I would like to give a big thank you from my heart to everyone who made this happen,” Ainslie said, gesturing to his parents and his sister who joined him at the Award ceremony. When asked what his plans are for the future Ainslie’s ambitions were clear: “The next goal for Britain is to try for the America’s Cup- we have a great British team. There are a lot of America’s Cup heroes in this room and we hope to see you on the water in the near future,” he added with a smile.
