America’s Cup, Vincenzo Onorato: “Avanti solo se competitivi”

Il presidente di Mascalzone Latino, il sailing team del Club Nautico di Roma, Challenger of Record della 34ma America’s Cup, parla del ruolo svolto dal suo gruppo di lavoro durante la definizione del nuovo format e conferma le difficoltà che il suo team sta incontrando nel convincere gli sponsor a seguirlo nella nuova avventura. Difficoltà che spingono Onorato a dichiarare: “Se nei prossimi mesi non riuscirò a garantire al team adeguate risorse economiche farò un passo indietro”.

SS: Che ruolo ha interpretato il Club Nautico di Roma nella definizione del formato della 34ma America’s Cup?
VO: In pratica il ruolo del Club Nautico Roma è sempre stato: primo, sensibilizzare il Defender, che è un team ricco di risorse, circa la difficoltà degli altri team nel reperire sponsor e quindi sulla necessità di contenere i costi. Secondo, contribuire a realizzare la più spettacolare America’s Cup di sempre e da qui è nata l’idea del catamarano.
SS: In vista della 34ma America’s Cup sono state apportate diverse modifiche al format dell’evento. Alcuni dettagli, come l’introduzione dei catamarani e la stima dei costi, hanno scoraggiato certi team dall’iscriversi. Altri, come il ritardo nel comunicare la sede dell’evento e il calendario delle World Series 2011, hanno reso difficile la raccolta fondi dei sindacati intenzionati a partecipare. Siete preoccupati che il format della 34ma America’s Cup possa essere furi target per questo sport?
VO: La Coppa necessitava di un cambiamento importante. Una volta ancora voglio sottolineare che i multiscafi comportano un risparmio dal punto di vista economico. Mi sembra che non si sia data la giusta importanza al fatto che la prossima Coppa America avrà inizio sui nuovi one design AC45 e questo aiuterà a contenere i costi, dando tempo ai team di trovare le risorse necessarie. Il ritardo nella scelta della sede è dovuta al fatto che in tempi di recessione economica come quelli attuali, molto tempo se n’è andato a causa delle trettative necessarie per chiudere l’accordo con le amministrazioni locali. Noi di Mascalzone Latino siamo impegnati per portare qualche evento dell’America’s Cup World Series in Italia. Anche noi, intanto, siamo nella stessa posizione degli altri: senza date e località è difficile coinvolgere gli sponsor.
SS: E’ stato detto che il Club Nautico Roma non ha una sufficiente solidità economica, che non ha velisti sotto contratto e che può contare solo su un limitato numero di designer. E’ vero? Le novità introdotte dal format della 34ma America’s Cup potrebbero impedire al Club Nautico Roma di partecipare alla manifestazione?
VO: In parte è vero. Abbiamo un accordo con qualche velista e abbiamo individuato una soluzione per il design team, ma è anche vero che al momento non abbiamo alcuno sponsor. Nell’ultima Coppa multi challenger, la trentaduesima, Mascalzone Latino era un team solido dal punto di vista finanziario. Personalmente non sono interessato a partecipare alla Coppa se non posso essere competitivo. Se nei prossimi mesi non riuscirò a garantire al team adeguate risorse economiche farò un passo indietro. Mi preme ricordare che Mascalzone Latino significa avere l’Italia nella Coppa. Ogni volta che regatiamo negli Stati Uniti, sia la sede dell’evento Key West, Miami, Newport o San Francisco, la comunità italiana stravede per noi. Vogliamo che siano orgogliosi di noi e ovviamente non dimentichiamo tutti i supporter italiani che ci seguono passo dopo passo.
AMERICA’S CUP, CHALLENGING TIMES FOR CHALLENGER OF RECORD

After his team had taken part in the last two editions of the America’s Cup, Onorato joined with the Club Nautico di Roma to be the Challenger of Record for the 34th America’s Cup. Here are some comments that Vincenzo shared with Scuttlebutt.
SS: What role has the Club Nautico di Roma played in developing the format for AC34?
VO: Basically the role of Club Nautico di Roma has always been: first to try to keep the Defender (which is a very rich team) sensitive to the problems of the others teams in search of sponsor and consequently to keep the costs low; second to build the most spectacular America’s Cup ever and here comes the Catamaran!
SS: There have many changes to the event format for AC34. Some of the changes, such as the multihull format and estimated costs, have discouraged certain teams from entering. Other changes, such as the delay to learn the AC34 venue and the location and schedule of the 2011 AC World Series, have hampered other teams efforts to raise funds. Is there concern now that the new event format for AC34 may have been too much for the sport?
VO: The Cup needed an important change and, one more time, I would like to underline that multihulls mean saving money. It doesn’t seem to me that this has been given the right attention that the Cup will start with 45 ft One-Design boats and that will keep down the costs and will give time to the teams for the fund raising. The delay to announce the venues is due to the fact that in such a difficult economic worldwide crisis, more time has been necessary for the negotiations with the locations. We, Mascalzone Latino, are working hard to take some AC World Series events in Italy. We are in the same position of the others teams: without dates and venues, it is much harder to manage sponsor negotiations.
SS: It has been said that Club Nautico di Roma is not sufficiently funded, that there are no sailors on contract, and very little technical design work is occurring. Is this true? Have the changes to the event format for AC34 hampered the ability of Club Nautico Roma to participate in AC34?
VO: It is partially true. We have an agreement with some sailors and a solution for the design team, but it’s also true that at the moment we haven’t got any sponsors. In the last multi-challenger edition, the 32nd America’s Cup, Mascalzone Latino was a very well funded team. I personally have no interest at all to be just involved in the Cup if I’ll not be competitive. If, in the next few months, I won’t be able to find the economic resources to make my team competitive, then I’ll quit. I wish to remind that Mascalzone Latino means Italy in the Cup. Any time we race in the USA, whether it is in Key West, Miami, Newport or San Francisco, there is a great Italian community cheering for us. We want them to be proud of us and obviously not forgetting our many fans in Italy that devotedly follow our progress.
