America’s Cup, BMW Oracle Racing-Valencia: c’eravamo tanto amati

[singlepic id=4972 w=320 h=213 float=left]America’s Cup – Valencia – Il sindaco di Valencia, Rita Barberà, ha criticato BMW Oracle Racing per non aver tenuto fede all’accordo posto in essere con la città di Valencia in base al quale la 34ma America’s Cup si sarebbe dovuta disputare proprio nella città spagnola. Inoltre, ha sottolineato che Valencia non è stata chiamata a parteciare a nessuna gara di selezione, indispensabile per mostrare le potenzialità della città, già ampiamente dimostrate nel corso delle ultime edizioni dell’evento.
Ricordiamo che la città spagnola ha abbracciato la grande vela internazionale nel lontano 2003, quando, grazie a una scelta lungimirante presa dal management di Alinghi, venne selezionata per ospitare la 32ma edizione della manifestazione, universalmente riconosciuta come la migliore di sempre.
La Barberà ha parlato alla stampa nel corso di un incontro indetto dopo aver saputo che il defender ha ormai puntato su San Francisco come sede della prossima edizione. Il sindaco è apparso piuttosto contrariato dal fatto che il defender si è limitato a comunicare al Consorzio Valencia 2007 la volontà di lasciare la base occupata sin dal 2004 entro la fine dell’anno.
Mostrando la famosa lettera con la quale BMW Oracle Racing si impegnava, in caso di vittoria, a confermare Valencia come sede dell’evento, il primo cittadino ha espresso un amaro: “Non c’è più alcun impegno. Dopo averci rassicurato, pare che abbiano scelto San Francisco. Non c’è stata alcuna gara, nessuna selezione”.
“Abbiamo saputo che l’amministrazione di San Francisco ha offerto 270 milioni di Dollari, direttamente o tramite gli sponsor, più 160 milioni per la preparazione delle infrastrutture che saranno completate da Larry Ellison che, in cambio, ne trarrà i profitti per i prossimi venticinque anni” ha continuato la Barberà che ha poi aggiunto come, da parte della sua amministrazione, ci fosse la disponibilità a concedere il pieno utilizzo del Port America’s Cup, valutato 250 milioni di Euro.
Il risentimento del sindaco valenciano è emerso chiaramente quando ha confermato che la città non ospiterà nessuna delle pre-regata perchè non c’è alcuna intenzione di ripiegare su eventi considerati di secondaria importanza.

[Source Las Provincias] The mayor of Valencia, Rita Barberá, has reprimanded the U.S. team BMW Oracle, reigning champions of the America’s Cup, which has failed in its commitment to hold the 34 edition of this centennial race again in Valencia if they won the competition, as it was the case.
Barbera expressed herself at a press conference after news that the 34 America’s Cup will be raced in San Francisco, and she has indicated that the only news she has is that the team chaired by Larry Ellison has informed the Consortium that they will leave their base in the port of Valencia by the end of the year.
She has shown the “famous” letter where the U.S. team showed its commitment to repeat Valencia as the venue, after the city had successfully hosted the 2007 and 2010 editions of the race and she emphasized that “there is no commitment any more”.
“After committing with us it appears now that they have decided on San Francisco”, pointed out the mayor, who has stressed that for the 34 edition Valencia has not participated to any venue selection process to showcase the potential of the cities.
“There has not been a bidding selection process,” said Barbera, who added that Valencia offered its Darsena, valued at 250 million euros “in kind”, provided by the City Council. She has also denied that the city of Valencia had offered $ 250 million to host the competition, as published in a newspaper of San Francisco.
“What we know is that the municipality of San Francisco has offered $ 270 million, directly or through sponsors, plus 160 million dollars for a first adaptation of the works of the basin, which will be complemented by Larry Ellison in exchange for 25 years exploitation”, explained about the conditions offered by the U.S. city to host the 34 edition.
The 33 edition cost more than 7 million to Valencia, paid with a loan from the Consortium Valencia 2007 guaranteed by the Regional Government “because the Central Government didn’t put a single euro,” she reminded. Therefore she considers that the cries for not hosting the 34 edition from the Socialist spokesperson at the City Hall, Carmen Alborch, are “demagogy” and “political cynicism.”
Finally, he noted that Valencia discards hosting any pre-regatta because the city is not going to settle for something less than it had in the past two editions.
